Does God Have Ears?

Rabbi Ma'ayan Sands

“My 9 year old grandson asked me, ‘Savta (Grandma), does God have ears that really work?’ That was my impetus for writing this story. When a young child asks that kind of question, what he really wants to know is whether he can trust that the world is a safe place. In the story Savta asks Sam a lot of questions. She understands that children are naturally spiritual beings and wants him to get in touch with his own thoughts about God. My job as a Savta and as the author of children’s stories is to help children feel safe in the world and to encourage them to develop their own relationship with God, perhaps even to sense the spark of the divine within themselves. For parents to talk with their children about God can be challenging. When parents and children read this story together at least the beginning of a discussion will be well underway.” – Rabbi Ma’ayan Sands, Rab’16
